Arizona Diamondbacks' Feng Shui grand slam: a roof that works*
The roof is finally being used again. Here's how it can help them be more successful than ever (but it's not a cure for all ills)
*In classical Feng Shui, it can take 6 - 9 months for major changes, like transforming the roof from inoperable to fully functioning and regularly used, to produce results. The 2025 season may be over so benefits may not accrue until the 2026 season. (Read my post on the Feng Shui of the Phoenix Suns.)
Let’s be clear that an operable roof won’t guarantee success by itself. Classical Feng Shui is complicated and it’d take a full audit of the facilities to determine what needs to change. The team does have issues with certain things that do seem a bit chronic, like pitching injuries; that and other problems could only be detected and corrected once the full audit is done and countermeasures are put into place. But the working, retractable roof will absolutely help get the 1i (positive, helpful energy) flowing and moving and help it to circulate rather than to stagnate in ways it hasn’t been doing for quite a while.
As a fan of the team since day one, I was happy that the Arizona Diamondbacks recently announced that this season (2025) the retractable roof at Chase Field will be fully functional for the first time since the 2022 season. This is great news from the standpoint of classical Feng Shui and should give the team a significant boost towards their goals, overall success, and add an extra layer of protection against injury and other misfortunes.*

Classical Feng Shui is a complicated art-science and there are many factors in the facility where the Diamondbacks play (and team offices are located) that affect the team’s fortunes. A retractable-roof ball field can be an extremely helpful classical Feng Shui element when it works properly, is safe, and is frequently opened and left open for prolonged periods of time. It offers no benefits to the team at all if it is under-used. Beneficial qi (pronounced "chee") energy moves over Earth and buildings the same way it moves over the meridians of the human body in acupuncture. The open roof allows qi to enter Chase Field, to circulate and collect inside. It is this "pool" of beneficial qi that attracts success and allows the team, players, coaches, management and ownership to meet and even exceed goals, as long as other helpful Feng Shui influences are also in place. This powerful source of qi can even infuse Diamondbacks fans with greater enthusiasm and attract new fans to the franchise.
A key benefit of having a functional retractable roof is with player injuries. Injuries are part of baseball no matter how good a facility's Feng Shui is, but having good Feng Shui in place helps injuries to come less often and to be less severe. It aids medical and training staff to better diagnose and treat injuries and supports faster and more complete healing.
When qi enters Chase Field, circulates, and collects, team-building and unity are greatly enhanced. It's easier to get everybody on the same page. Coaches invent inspired, creative, innovative solutions in this atmosphere. Management and ownership have an easier time locating up-and-coming talent and attracting stars who want to play in Arizona. The open roof allows for a great well of qi to build up in what's called the "ming tang" ("bright hall" in Chinese) on the actual playing field; it acts like a big bank account which can be drawn from to continually infuse the team with energy and what you might term good luck. A bounty of qi acts like a giant magnet for success and makes the Diamondbacks a more desirable destination for players and more attractive to fans both existing and new. Everybody benefits.
Still, the roof is just one Feng Shui factor influencing the Diamondback's success in the 2025 season. Classical Feng Shui is a complicated art-science and a full audit would have to be done of the field, stadium, offices, and training facilities to get it all balance, corrected, and configured for maximum success and fun. Still, the roof is a big and obvious factor that's so important because all by itself it transform the entire Flying Stars chart of the stadium, theoretically, into a whole new chart – and that's very hard to do! The roof works by way of a pulley system which has been reinforced with scaffolding to ensure that it won't be a safety hazard. In a super-competitive division like the one the Diamondbacks play in, every advantage counts and every game counts. They missed the playoffs last year by one game, in a season that was, not coincidentally, plagued with injuries to key players and that decimated their the pitching staff.
I’ve done Feng Shui audits for teams using retractable roofs and players playing in these facilities for baseball and other sports. Over time I observed the effect the roofs have had on team and player success. I think that retractable-roof stadia have an advantage over all others, as long as the roof works properly and is open often enough. For qi to do its thing, the roof must open and stay that way for several hours at a time. In Arizona, that's going to happen mainly at the beginning and end of the season because mid-summer is just too hot; but that's enough to get the job done.
If I were designing a new baseball stadium I would recommend having a retractable roof if at all possible, depending on the climate in which that stadium is located. The preferred design for a baseball field is always going to be open-air; that makes sense but it doesn't change the fact that the retractable roof is indeed a Feng Shui advantage. As long as the rest of the building and team's Feng Shui is set up right, the roof can only be a positive influence, a bonus, a valuable asset, and sometimes the difference between success and failure.
* In sports, there are no magical tricks or cures that totally prevent injury, insure a successful season, or make everything go right. This is obvious and I shouldn't have to say it, but added for context. Classical Feng Shui is one important thing we can do at home or at work to give us an advantage over the competition.
